Do Justice ● Love Kindness ● Walk Humbly with God – Micah 6:8
What is this “Aspley church” anyway?
In the Gospel of John we find out a little bit about Jesus, who he is and what his plan is right in the first chapter. He existed before time and was intimately involved in creation as part of the trinity. His divinity is established. And then what happens? He gives us the ultimate example of loving people. He becomes flesh, giving up the most exclusive of places and powers, and he dwells amongst us. He came down from heaven to jump in the mess and corruption of this world to walk with us. To give us grace upon grace. To show us the way, the truth and the life that is through him.
Jesus calls us to follow him, to know his voice. In Luke’s gospel Jesus quotes Isaiah with his purpose, good news to the poor, liberty to the captives, recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lords favour. In John 17 he sends us out as he was sent into the world.
We all should know the 2 commandments of Jesus as well. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and all your soul and with all your mind, and also, you shall love your neighbor as yourself.
These passages really speak to how we should be as Christians, what we should stand for and how we should be known. Yes, we are saved by grace alone, but as we know God more and more and are transformed grace by grace, we should be acting that way as well because it is an extension of who we are in Christ. We have family who are out there, walking among traps and pitfalls with enemies prepared to pounce on them. Some of them are burdened by hatred and anger, others riddled with drugs, others with severe mental illness not to mention countless other afflictions.
In Aspley there is a higher than normal proportion of our family like this there. There are also our family in God as well, There are all sorts down there and yet in the heart of Aspley there is no formal church prepared to jump in the mess. If we think we live in a just society, or a just culture, we are wrong. If we think handouts alleviate us of our burden to help our family, we are wrong. Micah 6:6-8 shows us that God is not interested in gifts and offerings to alleviate our guilt and shame, he wants us. He wants us to do what he wants us to do and say what he wants us to say, and what is that? To do justice, to love kindness, and walk humbly with your God.
With Aspley, we want to bring that there. We want to come and welcome family in, get to know them, hang out with them, eat and drink with them. It is a service where we will have music and teaching followed by a shared lunch.
This is where we have a rule:
- If it is your first time you are our guest, eat, drink, and hang out.
- If it’s your second time, you’re family, and you know what family do, the dishes! We are a family and everyone has value. If you can provide food, great but it’s also about setting up, prepping, cleaning up, and everyone having value and mucking in together.
That’s what we’re about, bringing the hope and love of God to Aspley in the way that Jesus first demonstrated.
